Households across the UK who receive Universal Credit are being urged to check their eligibility for a significant package of support this January, with a total potential value of £3,106 in freebies and discounts.
Substantial Council Tax and Household Support
One of the most valuable benefits available is a discount on Council Tax bills. Those on a low income or claiming benefits like Universal Credit could see their bill slashed by up to 100% if above State Pension age, or up to 80% for those below it. For a typical Band D property, an 80% reduction translates to an annual saving of £456.
Applications for this reduction are open to homeowners, renters, and those both in and out of work, with local councils assessing individual circumstances like income and savings.
Furthermore, the Household Support Fund, financed by the Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) and distributed by local authorities, can provide additional cash. The amount varies by location, but some councils, like Camden, offer payments of up to £500 to low-income households, including Universal Credit claimants.
Crucial Energy Bill Assistance This Winter
With winter in full swing, substantial help is available for energy costs. British Gas has reopened its Energy Support Fund, offering grants of up to £2,000 to help clear energy debt for existing customers in England, Scotland, and Wales.
To qualify, customers need to have energy debt between £50 and £2,000 on a pre-payment meter, or between £250 and £2,000 on a credit account. This fund distributed over £4.2 million in grants last winter.
Separately, the government's Warm Home Discount Scheme provides a one-off £150 discount on electricity bills for eligible households. This is usually applied automatically by suppliers, though those on a low income in Scotland may need to apply directly.
Eligibility and How to Claim
Universal Credit is a monthly payment for working-age people on low incomes or who are out of work, designed to help with living and housing costs. Key eligibility criteria include being under State Pension age and having savings below £16,000.
While the core benefit provides vital support, these additional perks can make a substantial difference to household budgets. Claimants are advised to contact their local council about Council Tax reductions and the Household Support Fund, and to speak directly to their energy supplier regarding the Warm Home Discount and the British Gas Energy Support Fund if applicable.
