Universal Credit Payments Set for Substantial Rise from June

The Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) is implementing a major boost to Universal Credit, with claimants set to receive up to £5,098 annually starting from around June. This increase represents a significant uplift in support for individuals and families across the country.

New Payment Rates Detailed

Single claimants aged 25 and over will now receive £424.90 per month, a substantial rise from the previous £400.14. This adjustment translates to approximately £5,098 annually, providing much-needed financial relief. The changes are part of the annual benefit rate review that typically takes effect in April.

For many benefits, the new rates officially began on April 6, 2026, marking the start of the 2026/27 tax year. However, Universal Credit claimants will see the increased payments take effect from their first assessment period beginning on or after April 7, which for many will be around June.

Comprehensive Increases Across All Categories

The benefit boost extends to all claimant categories:

  • Single claimants under 25: Standard allowance rises from £316.98 to £338.58 monthly
  • Couples where both partners are under 25: Payments increase from £497.55 to £528.34 monthly
  • Couples with one or both partners aged 25 or over: Payments rise from £628.10 to £666.97 monthly

These adjustments represent a 2.3 percent increase across the board, with the full implementation of new rates ensuring comprehensive support for diverse household situations.

Government Commitment to Welfare Reform

Labour Party Minister for Social Security and Disability Sir Stephen Timms emphasized the government's commitment to creating a more effective welfare system. "The welfare system we inherited has for too long locked disabled people and people with long term conditions out of work," he stated.

"Laws coming into force today will change that, reducing projected expenditure on Universal Credit by almost £1 billion. Simultaneously boosting the standard allowance and investing £3.5 billion in employment support means we're creating a welfare system that backs people to work and helps them build a better future."

Automatic Implementation for Claimants

Benefit claimants do not need to take any action to receive these increased payments. The DWP will automatically apply the new rates to all eligible Universal Credit claims, ensuring a seamless transition to the enhanced support system.

This comprehensive benefits increase comes as part of broader government efforts to strengthen social security while promoting employment opportunities through substantial investment in support services.
