Cardiff Charity Seeks More Volunteers to Support Local Families

Cardiff Charity Issues Urgent Call for Community Volunteers

Home-Start Cymru has launched an urgent appeal for additional volunteers across Cardiff to support vulnerable families through its ongoing #WhyDoI campaign. The charity, which currently provides assistance to approximately 46 families each year within the city, reports that demand for its essential services continues to grow significantly.

Expanding Volunteer Network to Meet Rising Needs

The organization is actively seeking to increase both the quantity and diversity of its volunteer base throughout the Cardiff area. Volunteers can choose between flexible commitment options, including approximately one hour of remote support weekly or two to three hours conducting home visits to families requiring assistance.

Practical and emotional support forms the core of volunteer responsibilities, with trained individuals offering everything from practical household help to emotional guidance and compassionate listening for parents navigating challenging circumstances.

Life-Changing Impact for Volunteers and Families

Mel, a dedicated volunteer with Home-Start Cymru for the past ten years, described her experience as profoundly transformative. "After dedicating over three decades as a full-time carer for my son, I felt I had completely lost my personal identity," she explained. "I was actively searching for something meaningful that would allow me to utilize my life experiences and skills in a productive way outside my home care responsibilities."

"When I noticed on social media that Home-Start Cymru needed volunteers, I immediately submitted my application," Mel continued. "I recognized that I possessed the necessary empathy and insight to genuinely help others. I commenced my training during the summer of 2024 and was matched with my first family by November that same year."

"Volunteering with Home-Start Cymru has been an incredibly fulfilling journey for me," Mel emphasized. "The knowledge that I have positively impacted families, helping them navigate difficulties while providing consistent support and friendship, gives me an immense sense of achievement. On a personal level, this volunteer work has dramatically boosted my self-confidence and reinforced my belief that I can pursue similar meaningful work in the future."

Cardiff Project Manager Highlights Critical Need

Ruth Triggs, Project Manager for Home-Start Cymru in Cardiff, stated: "Across Cardiff, we are actively recruiting new volunteers to join our existing team of dedicated, passionate, and caring home-visiting volunteers. By contributing just a couple of hours each week to support a family through their everyday challenges, volunteers can create genuine, lasting differences in people's lives while helping ensure children receive the best possible start in life."

Accessible Volunteering Opportunities Available

The charity emphasizes that no prior experience is necessary for prospective volunteers. Comprehensive training and ongoing support are provided to all participants. Volunteer commitments can be as minimal as a few hours weekly, making the program accessible to individuals with various schedules and availability.

Home-Start Cymru's initiative represents a crucial community response to increasing family support needs throughout Cardiff, offering residents meaningful opportunities to contribute directly to their local community's wellbeing.
