Derby Macular Society Seeks Volunteers for Support Group

Macular Society Derby Support Group Calls for Volunteers

The Macular Society Derby Support Group is launching a recruitment drive for volunteers to assist in running its essential monthly meetings. This local initiative provides a lifeline for individuals and families grappling with macular disease, a condition that can severely impact daily life.

Meeting Details and Volunteer Role

The group convenes on the first Wednesday of each month from 1:30 PM to 3:00 PM at the Central United Reformed Church on Green Lane in Derby. These sessions are open to all, including newly diagnosed patients, their families, friends, and carers. Volunteers are crucial for coordinating the meetings and fostering a welcoming, inclusive atmosphere where attendees can share experiences and find solace.

Lucinda Hardy, the charity’s volunteer manager, emphasized the profound impact of volunteer efforts: “The difference that our volunteers make to the lives of many macular disease patients is really beyond measure. Their dedication helps build a supportive community that empowers those facing sight loss.”

Training and Support for Volunteers

To ensure volunteers are well-prepared, the Macular Society offers comprehensive training for all new recruits. Additionally, any out-of-pocket expenses incurred during volunteer activities are fully covered by the charity, removing financial barriers for those willing to contribute their time and skills.

The Importance of Peer Support

Macular disease, which currently has no cure, can have devastating effects on both physical and mental wellbeing. The loss of central vision often leads to an inability to drive, read, or recognize faces, resulting in feelings of isolation and grief. Many individuals compare this experience to a form of bereavement.

Peer support through groups like this one is invaluable for boosting confidence and independence among those affected. With nearly 1.5 million people across the country living with macular disease, the demand for local support services has never been more critical.
