Rossendale Ramblers Enjoy Scenic Walks and Plan New Adventures

Rossendale Ramblers have had a delightful week of walking, blessed with sunny but not too warm weather that made for perfect conditions on the trails. The group, which welcomes walkers of all abilities, enjoyed two scenic outings that showcased the best of the local countryside.

Wednesday Walk: Barden Bridge and Bolton Abbey

On Wednesday, 20 ramblers embarked on an 11-mile walk from Barden Bridge, near the atmospheric ruin of Bolton Abbey. The route followed the River Wharfe, which included the infamous Strid, a narrow and treacherous stretch of water that is a notable feature of the area. The low-level riverside path was complemented by climbs to Simon’s Seat and Lord’s Seat, which offered long-distance views across the Yorkshire Dales. The combination of riverside scenery and elevated viewpoints made for a truly memorable day out.

Sunday Stroll: Kirklees Trail and Heritage Orchard

On Sunday, 18 walkers undertook a six-mile walk in Bury, featuring the Kirklees Trail and its associated local nature reserve. The group paused for lunch in the delightful heritage orchard at Hollymount, a tranquil spot that added a touch of history to the outing. After refuelling, the walkers crossed a beautiful valley with lovely views, rounding off another successful ramble.

Upcoming Walks: Barrowford and Gargrave

Looking ahead, the group has two exciting walks planned for August. On Sunday, August 9, they offer a seven-mile circular walk from Barrowford. This route will take in the Black Moss reservoirs, the charming village of Barley, and Roughlee, which is known for its stepping stones and the Alice Nutter statue. The walk promises a mix of waterside paths, village charm, and local history.

Then, on Wednesday, August 12, the ramblers head to Gargrave for a 10-mile walk in this lovely part of North Yorkshire. The route will take them to the villages of Airton and Calton before returning to Gargrave. This walk is described by the group as 'definitely not to be missed', offering a chance to explore the picturesque countryside of the Yorkshire Dales.
