Rossendale Ramblers Enjoy Three Scenic Walks in Varied Weather Conditions
Rossendale Ramblers Enjoy Three Scenic Walks

Rossendale Ramblers enjoyed three varied walks this week in good walking weather, covering reservoirs, wartime history, and limestone landscapes.

Wednesday Walk: Ripponden to Soyland Town

On Wednesday, nine ramblers set off from Ripponden for a 10-mile walk that started in breezy and chilly conditions. The route passed the River Ryburn and Ryburn Reservoir, followed by Baitings Reservoir, both described as looking unhealthy. A climb up Manshead Hill warmed the walkers, who then saw remnants of a Second World War Operation Starfish site, built to divert German bombers from nearby industrial operations. The walk finished at Mill Bank and Soyland Town.

Saturday Pub Walk: Holcombe Brook

On Saturday, 15 walkers enjoyed a two-hour pub walk from Holcombe Brook, taking in Redisher Woods and the MoD firing range. The group also saw the old Krypton Factor assault course, which one walker had conquered years ago. Most walkers then enjoyed an extra hour of social time over lunch at the pub.

Sunday Walk: Long Causeway and Sheddon Clough

On Sunday, 16 ramblers completed a seven-mile walk from Long Causeway, an old packhorse route near Cliviger. The walk included sections of the Pennine Bridleway, championed by Lady Mary Towneley for horse riders. It concluded near Sheddon Clough, a limestone mining area that left the landscape in lumps and bumps.

Upcoming Walks

On Sunday, July 26, a 6/7-mile walk titled 'Hoddlesden through Time' will explore the rural area and its changes. On Wednesday, July 29, a 10-mile walk from Barden Bridge near Bolton Abbey will visit Simon's Seat, Lord's Seat, Barden Fell, and the Valley of Desolation. On Friday, July 31, a 24-mile linear walk from Rawtenstall to Manchester via Ramsbottom, Bury, Prestwich, and Salford will follow the River Irwell. Walkers can do the whole walk or choose the first or second half, followed by a meal in Manchester centre.
