Rossendale Ramblers had another hot week with two walks, though one was affected by traffic issues. The Wednesday walk at Yarrow Valley Country Park near Chorley was planned for 21 ramblers, but an accident on the M65 prevented nine from reaching the start. The remaining group enjoyed a gentle nine-mile walk through lush vegetation, crossing a railway line several times and following a section of the Leeds & Liverpool Canal. Near the end, a weir and fish ladder on the River Yarrow provided extra interest.
Sunday Stroll on Marsden Moor
On Sunday, six walkers met at Marsden Moor near Huddersfield for a five-mile walk. The main aim was to ascend the distinctively shaped Pule Hill. Along the way, they passed several reservoirs – one empty – and two ventilation shafts for the Standedge Tunnels, which carry the Huddersfield Narrow Canal and a railway line. The day was described as a lovely outing.
Upcoming Walks: A Busy Week Ahead
The coming week features four walks showcasing the group's variety. On Saturday, July 18, a popular two-hour pub walk from Holcombe Brook will visit Redisher Woods and the MoD firing range, returning to the pub for optional socialising and lunch.
Sunday, July 19, offers a seven-mile walk starting at Long Causeway, Cliviger. The route passes through varied countryside, pretty hamlets, and two reservoirs, finishing by 2pm.
Wednesday, July 22, features an 11-mile walk from Foulridge, covering the villages of Trawden, Wycoller, and Laneshaw Bridge. In decent weather, views will be lovely.
Friday, July 24, presents a more challenging 13-mile ridge walk in the Peak District, including iconic spots such as Mam Tor, Hollins Cross, Edale, Golden Clough, Nether Top, Crowden Tower, Kinder Low, Brown Knoll, and Lord's Seat.
