Birmingham charity launches free summer youth programme for girls
Free summer youth programme for girls in Birmingham

A Birmingham charity has launched a free summer programme aimed at encouraging young women to swap screens for new experiences. InUnity is offering a range of activities for girls aged 11 to 16 across south Birmingham this summer under the banner Summer of the Girl.

Addressing social isolation and screen time

The six-week programme responds to growing concerns about social isolation, excessive screen time, and the rising cost of keeping young people entertained during the school holidays. InUnity, a non-profit organisation, built on its existing initiatives to create this free offering.

Activities include aerial arts, kayaking, silent discos, self-defence workshops, bubble tea and bedazzling sessions, and a photo colour walk. Each event is free, providing safe spaces for girls to hang out, make friends, and build confidence.

Safe spaces for girls to be themselves

A spokesperson for InUnity said: “We know that many families are feeling the pressure of rising costs, and we also know that girls need safe spaces where they can simply be themselves. Summer of the Girl is about giving young people opportunities to make friends, build confidence and create memories. We want girls to spend their summer discovering new interests, developing new skills and enjoying experiences they may not otherwise have access to.”

Activities and locations

The programme includes Girls Night In social sessions, beginner aerial arts and silks, bubble tea and bedazzling workshops, a girls’ self-defence session, kayaking, a photo colour walk, and silent discos. Activities take place across various locations in south Birmingham, with details available on the InUnity website.
