Dover and Deal's Member of Parliament, Mike Tapp, is launching a major new initiative aimed at connecting young people with the political process. The project, named 'Tapp into Politics', will see him visit every secondary school across the constituency from early next year.
Building on a Summer Success Story
The new political engagement drive follows the positive outcome of Tapp's summer programme, 'Tapp into Reading'. That event, held at the Astor Theatre in Deal after months of planning with local primary schools, encouraged children to read aloud and perform on stage.
"I was incredibly committed to connecting with young people across our constituency and helping to build their confidence through reading and self-expression," the MP stated, confirming the project's success inspired this next phase of community outreach.
Bridging the Political Engagement Gap
The 'Tapp into Politics' initiative is a direct response to research highlighting a disconnect between young people and politics. Tapp cited findings from UK Youth and other charities, which show that while 88% of young people believe having a political voice matters, only one in ten feel politicians regularly consider their needs.
"I strongly believe this must change," Tapp emphasised. "Political decisions should reflect the needs of everyone across the UK, and that includes young people. They are our future, and their perspectives deserve to be heard and taken seriously."
What the Initiative Will Involve
Starting in early 2024, the MP will tour secondary schools in Dover, Deal, and surrounding villages. The sessions are designed to be lively and interactive, focusing on:
- Open discussions and debates on issues important to students, the community, and the country.
- Direct questioning of the MP by pupils.
- Insights into how policymaking works.
- Learning the fundamentals of constructive debate.
Tapp noted that young people interact with public systems—from education and healthcare to future employment and taxation—every day. "Many are already directly affected by political decisions, and we should be encouraging them to understand and engage with the processes that shape these outcomes," he said.
Equipping the Next Generation
While the MP has visited schools before, he described this new programme as an "exciting opportunity" to listen to younger constituents in a more dynamic way. The ultimate goal is to provide the next generation with the knowledge, confidence, and sense of representation needed for full democratic participation.
"I am genuinely looking forward to getting out into the community," Tapp concluded, "and helping to equip the next generation."
