Essex County Council has launched a design contest for young people aged 18 and under to create a modern coat of arms for Harwich, with the winning design to be permanently displayed as public artwork on a utility cabinet outside Harwich Library. The winner will also receive a £100 voucher.
Contest Details and Inspiration
The competition is part of improvement work in Dovercourt. Entrants are encouraged to draw inspiration from local maritime history, landmarks, wildlife, and community spirit. The winning design will be turned into a lasting piece of public art.
Five shortlisted entries will be displayed at Harwich Library, where local residents will vote for the overall winner. The champion will be announced in the autumn and will unveil their finished design at a special launch event.
Eligibility and Submission Guidelines
To take part, entrants must live or study in Harwich and submit just one piece of original artwork. Entries can be created using paint, drawing tools, mixed media, or digital software. The contest runs from Tuesday, July 28, 2026 to Tuesday, September 8, 2026 (midnight closing).
Free two-hour creative workshops will be held at Harwich Arts and Heritage Centre on August 18 and August 20. These sessions will teach participants about heraldry and help them develop design ideas for their submissions.
