Royal Family Announces Commemorations for Queen Elizabeth II's 100th Birthday
King Charles and Queen Camilla will lead nationwide tributes later this month to honor what would have been the 100th birthday of the late Queen Elizabeth II. The commemorative events, spanning multiple days, will include a major fashion exhibition, a heartfelt national address, and the opening of memorial gardens.
Major Fashion Exhibition at Buckingham Palace
On Monday, April 20, the King and Queen will attend the opening of Queen Elizabeth II: Her Life in Style at The King's Gallery in Buckingham Palace. This exhibition, organized by the Royal Collection Trust, represents the largest-ever showcase of Elizabeth II's fashion and will run until October 2026.
The exhibition features more than 300 pieces from the late Queen's wardrobe, including vibrant dresses, elegant hats, shoes, handbags, and even a rare pair of trousers that once belonged to the monarch. Remarkably, almost half of these items will be on public display for the very first time, offering unprecedented insight into her personal style.
King Charles' National Address and Memorial Events
On Tuesday, April 21, King Charles will deliver a heartfelt address to the nation, honoring his mother's life and enduring legacy. The 77-year-old monarch is expected to express how Queen Elizabeth II served as a profound inspiration, both personally to him and to the wider royal family.
Later that afternoon, Charles and Camilla, accompanied by other royal family members, will review design proposals for the Queen Elizabeth Memorial at the British Museum. Simultaneously, the Princess Royal will formally open The Queen Elizabeth II Garden in London's Regent's Park.
Buckingham Palace Reception and Additional Tributes
The commemorative day will culminate with a reception at Buckingham Palace hosted by the King and Queen, joined by the Prince and Princess of Wales and other family members. This event will bring together dozens of representatives from charities and organizations associated with the late Queen throughout her remarkable 70-year reign.
Additional commemorative initiatives include a national monument in St James's Park featuring a statue of Queen Elizabeth II in a newly created civic space called Queen Elizabeth II Place. The design also incorporates a "family of gardens," winding pathways, and a striking new translucent glass unity bridge inspired by the tiara she wore on her wedding day to Prince Philip in 1947.
Celebrating a Historic Reign
Queen Elizabeth II became Britain's longest-reigning monarch on September 9, 2015, surpassing Queen Victoria's record of 63 years, seven months, and two days. The nation celebrated her Platinum Jubilee in 2022, marking 70 years on the throne, before she passed away peacefully at Balmoral on September 8, 2022, at age 96.
A royal source emphasized that the tone of the commemorations "will not be somber, but rather a celebration and a chance for people across our four nations and the Commonwealth to come together and reflect on an amazing life and legacy of our late queen."
Further tributes include special £5 coins from the Royal Mint and numerous cultural exhibitions and heritage openings planned throughout the commemorative period.
