Medicine Bakery Announced as New Tenant at Ikon Gallery
Birmingham's beloved Ikon Gallery has revealed its new culinary tenant, bringing delight to locals and visitors alike. Medicine Bakery will be moving into the space previously occupied by Yorks, which closed its kitchen at the free-to-visit contemporary art venue last autumn.
The announcement ends months of speculation about the future of the cafe spot in the Brindleyplace hotspot, ensuring the gallery remains a vibrant destination for art and refreshments.
A Popular Bakery Expands Its Presence
Medicine Bakery is well-known across the region for its exquisite bakes and quality coffee, with existing locations on New Street, within Selfridges, and at Birmingham Botanical Gardens. The new outlet at Ikon Gallery is scheduled to open from mid-March, though an exact launch date has yet to be confirmed.
This expansion marks a significant step for the bakery, further embedding it into Birmingham's cultural and culinary landscape.
Yorks' Departure and Gallery Context
Yorks ceased operations at the Ikon Gallery shortly after closing its corner spot on the Paradise development, with another branch on Stephenson Street also remaining closed. The departure left a void in the gallery's amenities, but Medicine Bakery's arrival promises to fill it with artisanal treats.
The Ikon Gallery, located on Oozells Square, is particularly enchanting in spring due to its famous annual cherry blossom display. This seasonal beauty adds to the allure of visiting the gallery, making the new bakery a timely addition.
Upcoming Exhibitions and Events
Beyond the bakery, Ikon Gallery continues to offer free exhibitions of contemporary art. From March 25 to September 6, the gallery will host 'UPRIGHT', a major exhibition featuring acclaimed artist Angela de la Cruz. This showcase includes rarely seen works and a new commission created in collaboration with Birmingham Royal Ballet.
On the same day, the final installment of the Break The Mould trilogy will debut, highlighting ceramics from artists such as Jack Ky Tan, Halima Cassell, and Roo Dhissou. Additionally, two ceramics workshops will be offered by Sundragon Community Pottery from Balsall Heath and Modern Clay cooperative studio from Digbeth.
The Ikon Gallery is situated at Brindleyplace, Oozells Square, Birmingham, B1 2HS, making it a central and accessible destination for art enthusiasts and food lovers alike.
