Mansfield Museum and Art Gallery Unveils Open Art 2026 Exhibition
Mansfield Museum and Art Gallery is thrilled to announce the launch of Open Art 2026, a dynamic and inclusive exhibition that spotlights the work of 27 talented local and regional artists. This vibrant showcase will be open to the public from Saturday, April 4, through Saturday, June 27, at the museum's Leeming Street location, celebrating the rich diversity and creativity of the area's artistic community.
Community-Driven Selection Process
The exhibition follows an open call issued last year, which garnered over 50 submissions from artists across the region. A dedicated community panel, composed of local residents, meticulously reviewed each entry to select the final works on display. This unique approach places the community at the heart of the curatorial process, ensuring the exhibition reflects a broad spectrum of voices and perspectives, fostering a sense of ownership and pride among Mansfield residents.
Diverse Artistic Practices and Themes
Open Art 2026 features an impressive array of artistic disciplines, including painting, sculpture, photography, printmaking, textiles, and mixed media. The exhibition brings together a mix of established professionals, emerging artists, hobbyists, and individuals exhibiting publicly for the first time, highlighting the inclusive nature of the event.
- Abbi Olla presents mixed media works inspired by the natural world, using textures and materials to explore growth, change, and the beauty of local landscapes.
- Caitlin Bower, a self-taught photographer making her public debut, offers conceptual imagery that delves into themes of transformation and the subtle boundaries between reality and imagination.
The exhibition explores a wide range of themes, from personal experience and family life to heritage, nature, and contemporary storytelling. Together, the works celebrate not only artistic skill and imagination but also the powerful role creativity plays in fostering connection, reflection, and pride in place.
Official Launch and Community Impact
The exhibition will be officially launched at a preview evening on Thursday, April 2, with the Mayor of Mansfield, Andy Abrahams, and other invited guests in attendance. Mayor Abrahams commented, "Open Art is a fantastic example of what can be achieved when creativity and community come together. This exhibition gives local people a platform to share their voices, tell their stories, and celebrate their talents. It's not just about art on the walls — it's about pride in our place, supporting one another, and recognising the importance of culture in bringing our community closer together."
This annual exhibition continues to support artists at all stages of their creative journeys, providing a welcoming and accessible platform while strengthening connections between the museum and the community it serves. Visitors are encouraged to explore the exhibition, discover new artists, and engage with the stories and emotions behind each piece.
Entry to Mansfield Museum and Art Gallery is free, and everyone is welcome to attend. The museum is located in Mansfield, Nottinghamshire, offering an enriching cultural experience for all ages.
