TV Star Launches Must-See Sun Sculpture in Birmingham This Week

A highly anticipated illuminated sculpture of the sun, created by renowned British artist Luke Jerram, is now on free public display in Birmingham. The artwork, titled Helios, will be located at the University of Birmingham's city centre venue, The Exchange, until November 1, offering visitors a unique blend of art and science.

Artistic and Scientific Marvel

Measuring five metres in diameter, Helios uses high-resolution photographic solar imagery to reveal intricate details of the sun's surface. From swirling sunspots to dramatic solar flares, the sculpture is illuminated from within, creating a breathtaking visual experience. This installation is part of a wraparound exhibition called Seeing the Sun, which aims to engage the public with astronomical phenomena.

Grand Opening and Events

The official public opening in Birmingham, which has already sold out, coincides with the Spring Equinox on Friday, March 20. Hosted by Professor Alice Roberts, Professor of Public Engagement in Science, the event will feature a Q&A session with Luke Jerram and Bill Chaplin, Professor of Astrophysics at the University of Birmingham. Cassie Chadderton, director of culture, collections and public engagement at the University of Birmingham, expressed excitement about the display, stating, "We're excited to welcome visitors to experience Helios at The Exchange. Like so much of Luke's work, Helios brings art and science together in an awe-inspiring, beautiful form."

She added, "Helios is a wonderful invitation for everyone to explore our sun, to discover some of the world-changing science taking place right here in Birmingham, and experience the University as a place that is open, curious, creative and full of life. It’s a perfect addition to our vibrant cultural offer, and we can’t wait to share it with people across Birmingham, the West Midlands and beyond."

Family and Community Engagement

On Saturday, March 21, a special family day will be held at The Exchange. This free drop-in event will allow children and families to get up close to Helios, meet researchers, and explore real solar science firsthand. Throughout the installation, a wider programme of events will take place at The Exchange in connection with Helios, including:

  • Free talks on astronomy and art
  • Creative workshops for all ages
  • Family exploration days with hands-on activities
  • Accessible tours for visitors with disabilities
  • Quiet sessions for a more relaxed viewing experience

Permanent Acquisition and Future Display

The University of Birmingham has permanently acquired Helios as part of its cultural collection. After its time at The Exchange, the sculpture will move to a long-term display at the university's Edgbaston campus, ensuring that this magnificent artwork remains accessible to the public for years to come. This acquisition highlights the university's commitment to integrating art and science into community engagement and cultural enrichment.
