The complete schedule for Birmingham's vibrant Chinese New Year celebrations has been officially revealed, promising an extensive six-day festival that is entirely free for the public to enjoy. The 2026 Lunar New Year festivities will transform Birmingham city centre with a spectacular display of colour, music, and cultural activities, marking the beginning of the Year of the Fire Horse.

Festival Details and Community Collaboration

Organised by the Birmingham Chinese Festival Committee in partnership with Birmingham Hippodrome, the celebration features an array of family-friendly events designed to engage the entire community. The festival is strategically timed to coincide with the February half term holidays, providing an ideal opportunity for families to participate in the cultural festivities.

Comprehensive Event Schedule

The celebrations commence on Tuesday, February 17th, with Southside becoming the focal point for the week-long festivities. Colourful lantern displays will illuminate the area, setting the stage for daily activities.

From Tuesday through Saturday, February 17th to 21st, visitors can explore market stalls situated outside Birmingham Hippodrome and throughout Southside. These will be complemented by funfair rides, creating a lively atmosphere for all ages.

Grand Finale Day Highlights

Sunday, February 22nd serves as the festival's grand finale, packed with exciting events starting at midday. The day will begin with traditional lion and dragon processions travelling from the Arcadian to the Festival Stage on Hippodrome Square.

Throughout the day, Pom Pom, a beloved ten-foot panda character, will make special appearances across Southside, delighting younger attendees. At 1:30 PM, the Patrick Studio at Birmingham Hippodrome will host The New Earth Theatre Makers Academy Plus Birmingham Showcase, presenting original performance works developed over a five-month programme.

Diverse Performance Line-up

The festival stage will feature a packed schedule of entertainment including:

  • K-pop dance performances
  • Traditional Chinese dance displays
  • Energetic drumming demonstrations
  • School choir performances
  • Street entertainment throughout Chinatown

Numerous food vendors will offer authentic Chinese cuisine, allowing visitors to experience traditional flavours alongside the cultural performances.

Accessibility and Inclusivity Features

The festival organisers have placed significant emphasis on accessibility, with an Access Hub located at the front of Birmingham Hippodrome. This facility will provide:

  4. Equipment borrowing including ear defenders, fidget toys, and audio description headsets
