Houlton Named Among Best Places to Live in West Midlands

Houlton, a new village near Rugby that has emerged from the historic site of the world's first transatlantic telephone exchange, has been named among the best places to live in the West Midlands by lifestyle experts Muddy Stilettos. The village, which is home to around 850 residents and growing rapidly, received national recognition for its "real community spirit" and "leafy, walkable streets."

Historic Roots and Modern Design

Houlton takes its name from Houlton, Maine, the American town that received the first transatlantic telephone call from Rugby's radio station in 1927. The Grade II-listed transmitter building now houses Houlton School, which won the RIBA Reinvention Award. The village is praised for its sustainable design, green spaces, and walkable layout, blending heritage with modern living.

Community and Amenities

The judging panel from Muddy Stilettos noted that "life here buzzes with activity." The community hub, The Barn, hosts yoga, salsa classes, and a coffee shop. The village also features a nursery, schools, a doctor's surgery, a Co-Op, and plans for a train station. Residents enjoy community gardens, sports pitches, outdoor table tennis, play parks, and an adventure playground.

Year-round events include live theatre, Junior Bake Offs, voice and drama classes, toddler sessions, 'crafternoons', police pop-ins, and CPR training. Rugby town centre adds farmers' markets, open-air cinema, Diwali lights, Chinese New Year festivities, and the Christmas Lights Switch-On. The Festival on the Close, a five-day summer event at Rugby School, is also open to all.

Recognition and Future Growth

Houlton has also been praised by The Observer for its "thoughtful planning" and "nature on the doorstep." With over 850 residents already, the village is expected to grow further, attracting families seeking a well-connected, vibrant community. The Muddy Stilettos award highlights Houlton as a standout new Midlands address where "heritage meets tomorrow."
