Morris Dancers Barred from Historic Lichfield Bower Over Slow Pace
Morris Dancers Banned from Lichfield Bower Over Slow Pace

Anger has erupted in the leafy city of Lichfield after a group of morris dancers was barred from the annual Lichfield Bower parade, a tradition dating back to the 12th century. Organisers claimed the Three Spires Morris group caused delays in previous years by ignoring instructions, but the dancers say they were never informed of any issues.

Disruption Claims

The Bower committee, which organises the late May Bank Holiday procession, stated online: 'Last year and in the previous Bower, the morris dancers delayed the procession by not following the directions of the chief marshal. In 2025, this was particularly disruptive. While we appreciate the contribution of Three Spires in recent years, we could not allow this to continue. The committee therefore had to make the difficult decision to find an alternative side.'

However, the replacement group pulled out at short notice, leaving no morris dancers in the parade. The committee added: 'We are already actively looking for a morris side to lead next year's procession. The morris is an integral part of the Bower procession, but we cannot allow it to detract from the smooth running of the procession as a whole.'

Dancers Respond

The Three Spires Morris group hit back on Facebook: 'Three Spires Morris are very saddened and concerned to see the comments the Bower organisers have made about the side. We are concerned the issues raised have never been brought to the attention of the side before. The side has never received any formal complaints concerning our attendance and behaviour at any previous Bower processions and particularly none with regard to our attendance in 2024 and 2025. Had the organisers raised their concerns we would have been happy to work with them.'

They added: 'We are proud to be a Lichfield Morris side and proud to help celebrate our city's traditions. Our aim as a side is always to promote the good name of Lichfield, as we are sure is the aim of the Bower organisers.'

Public Reaction

Many locals voiced support for the dancers. Heather Bustin commented: 'A very gracious post from a group that clearly have pride in Lichfield, want to uphold traditions and support the Bower. I hope this post encourages the Bower committee to respond to your communication as I know this has previously been ignored.' Valerie Meanock said: 'The Bower was not the same without the Morris. To me it symbolises it with the boughs being carried. It's a lovely old tradition and should be carried on and the May Queen.' Sue Keaveney added: 'The Bower isn't the Bower without the morris dancers!'

However, some defended the committee. Stuart Jakeman said: 'The Bower committee are all volunteers giving up countless hours, not to mention the hundreds if not thousands of pounds of their own money... I am more than happy to stand down leaving open, park organiser, health and safety officer for the whole event and vice treasurer if you wish to fill these posts.' Elaine Hutchings called for dialogue: 'This is all so very sad. I'm not sure this needs to continue on social media... maybe a meeting with the morris dancers and the Bower committee is the best way forward.'
