Pigeon Park's Big Wheel Signals Return to Pre-2024 Easter Schedule in Birmingham
Pigeon Park Big Wheel Hints at Return to 2024 Easter Schedule

Work is currently underway in Birmingham's beloved Pigeon Park, with the installation of a big wheel sparking speculation that the city centre is returning to its 2024 schedule for seasonal attractions. Cathedral Square, the largest green space in central Birmingham, is springing to life not only with daffodils but also with this familiar festive structure.

Earlier Arrival of the Big Wheel

On Tuesday, March 24, construction began on the big wheel in Pigeon Park, presumably timed for the upcoming Easter holidays. This marks a significant shift from recent years. In 2025, the big wheel arrived in June and remained through the summer until August 31. The year prior, in 2024, it was constructed in May and stayed throughout the summer season.

The early installation this year strongly suggests Birmingham is reverting to its 2024 timetable, bringing the attraction back for the Easter period rather than later in the year. The Easter holidays themselves run from Monday, March 30 to Friday, April 10, aligning perfectly with the wheel's appearance.

Contrast with Winter Attractions

This development contrasts with the recent winter tradition of the 'Birmingham Eye' big wheel on Centenary Square, which coincides with the Frankfurt Christmas Market. The return of a wheel to Pigeon Park in spring indicates a broader, year-round approach to city centre attractions.

Further details on how long the wheel will remain and other planned activities for Pigeon Park this year are expected to be announced soon.

Cathedral and Community Events

Meanwhile, Birmingham Cathedral is preparing for Holy Week and Easter with a full programme of services from Palm Sunday, March 29, to Easter Sunday. This includes choral evensong services, processions, and a Walk of Witness, enriching the spiritual life of the city centre.

Cathedral Square, located in the heart of the Colmore Business District, will also host the 13th annual Colmore Food Festival on Victoria Square. Scheduled for Friday, July 3, and Saturday, July 4, this free event features food and drink from top city centre venues, including Michelin Star restaurants and local favourites, all at capped prices.

Last year's festival saw a record-breaking turnout of 75,000 visitors, highlighting Birmingham's vibrant culinary scene. The festival will run from 11am to 8pm on both days, offering ample opportunity for residents and tourists to enjoy the offerings.

This combination of early seasonal attractions, religious observances, and community festivals underscores Birmingham's dynamic city centre life, with Pigeon Park at its core.
