An exciting new 22-mile walking trail linking five historic churches in North Wales has officially opened to the public as spiritual journeys grow in popularity. The scenic route follows a distinct figure-of-eight path along existing countryside tracks between Conwy and Llangelynnin.
Unique passport and stamps
People tackling the trail can collect a unique stamp at each church inside a specially designed passport to record their personal journey. A local artist created the commemorative booklet, while children from two nearby primary schools designed the artistic stamps found along the way.
Inspiration from popular TV series
The route has been launched following a surge of public interest after a popular television series followed seven celebrities walking through Wales. The trek begins or ends at a central town church which still contains the ancient remains of a 12th-century monastery.
Route details
The walking route continues through a beautiful valley towards a historic hilltop church that already welcomes long-distance walkers. The trail includes five separate sacred sites including St Mary’s in Conwy, St Mary’s in Caerhun, St Benedict’s in Gyffin, St Peter‘s in Llanbedr-y-Cennin, and Llangelynnin Old Church.
Official launch event
The official launch event featured a special history exhibition alongside interactive activities with local school children. Revd Kevin Ellis, Vicar of Bro Celynnin Ministry Area, said: “The churches of the trail have been part of the landscape and fabric of life here for hundreds of years. We hope that pilgrims and visitors will discover and rediscover them and the way they tell the story of Jesus.”
Rosemary Mart, who secured funding for the project, said: “We want to offer opportunities for walkers to take time out of their busy lives, to exercise, to pause, to reflect for the benefit of their physical, mental and spiritual wellbeing in our beautiful part of the world. If it leads people to questions of faith or perhaps doubt, we are here to walk with them on their journey.”
