The Green Howards Museum will host an exclusive event commemorating William 'Twiggy' Short VC, where attendees will learn about his selfless actions in 1916 at Munster Alley Trench on the Somme. The day concludes with the rare privilege of holding the Twiggy Short VC medal group.
Who Was Twiggy Short?
William 'Twiggy' Short was a steelworker from Eston and a local footballer, playing for Grangetown Albion, Saltburn, and Lazenby United. He joined the army in September 1914, serving with the 8th Battalion of the Green Howards. On August 6, 1916, at Munster Alley trench near Contalmaison, France, during the Battle of the Somme, he was wounded but refused evacuation. Unable to stand, he lay in the trench adjusting detonators and straightening grenade pins for his comrades. He died before being carried out. For this courage, he was posthumously awarded the Victoria Cross.
Event Highlights
The day includes a guided tour of the museum collection led by researcher Steve Erskine, handling rare Somme-related items, and a talk by Western Front Association member Dave Barras about two other Green Howard VC recipients: Tom Dresser and David Hirsch. Refreshments and lunch are included.
