The school community at St John's Stonefold in Accrington has unveiled a peaceful outdoor space to honour the memory of Shirley Adams, the late chair of governors who dedicated many years to the school. The garden was officially opened on Wednesday, July 1, during a moving ceremony attended by the entire school, friends, church members, and representatives from the Blackburn Diocese Board of Education.
Ceremony and Tributes
Shirley's close friend and companion, Michael, cut the ribbon to open the garden, joined by head boy Ellis. Every child and adult at the school contributed to the tribute by decorating a unique pebble with a message, memory, or symbol of hope, forming a vibrant mosaic. At the centre of the quiet space sits a beautifully crafted planter box shaped like a cross, reflecting her deep faith.
Legacy Award and Annual Trophy
Headteacher Paul Burns unveiled a special legacy award to recognise Shirley's outstanding commitment to the classroom. He also introduced a new annual trophy that will be presented to a pupil who displays the school values through their everyday lives. A memorial bench inscribed with her name has been installed nearby, offering a quiet area for reflection.
Living Tribute
Teachers hope the garden will remain a living, growing space that evolves alongside the pupils, with Shirley's presence quietly woven into the daily life of the school. The peaceful tribute ensures her memory endures as children play nearby.
