Nostalgic Archive Photos Show Macclesfield's Royal Celebrations and Daily Life
Nostalgic Archive Photos of Macclesfield's Royal Celebrations

A nostalgic journey through Macclesfield's past reveals a treasure trove of enchanting images from the archives, capturing moments in and around the town centre. This week's cover image transports us back to the Queen Elizabeth II Silver Jubilee celebrations in 1977, a jubilant event that brought the community together.

Royal Celebrations Through the Decades

The Poynton Library Float was a standout participant in the 1977 Silver Jubilee parade, as documented by Cheshire Archives and Local Studies. A century earlier, in 1887, crowds gathered on Park Green for Queen Victoria's Golden Jubilee Day. Macclesfield Sunday Schools assembled there, singing the national anthem and holding banners. Spectators watched from rooftops, with buildings like Frost Mill (destroyed in a 2011 fire) and the Methodist Free Church (also known as Chapel Mill, before its conversion) visible in the background.

Parades and Iconic Landmarks

A 1920s Whit Walk in Poynton featured a band and St George's Sunday School in a popular parade. The old Sunday School on Roe Street at the junction with Churchill Way, now the Silk Heritage Centre, stands as an iconic building. Another image shows three women and two men at an industrial laundry, believed to be Hollins Steam Laundry Co. in Langley, with machinery on the left; the date remains unknown.
