Princess Eugenie reveals sentimental reason behind daughter's name
Princess Eugenie reveals daughter's name and meaning

Princess Eugenie has confirmed the name of her third child, a daughter born in Portugal on 3 August 2026, and revealed the deeply personal significance behind the choice. In an Instagram post shared two weeks after the birth, she announced the baby is named Adelaide Elizabeth Annina Brooksbank.

The name pays tribute to three people the couple admire, including a direct link to her late grandmother, Queen Elizabeth II. Eugenie wrote: "2 weeks ago today we welcomed our girl to the world. And since then we've had the most special, cosy and love-filled time.

"We are so happy to share Adelaide Elizabeth Annina Brooksbank. Named after three people we love and admire past and present, including her Great-Grandmother who we hold close in our hearts. Her name is part of English and Portuguese history, two places we love and call home."

Historical and Royal Significance

The first name, Adelaide, references Adelaide of Saxe-Meiningen, the Queen Consort of King William IV, who reigned from 1830 to 1837. The middle name Elizabeth is a clear tribute to the late Queen Elizabeth II, who died in 2022. The third name, Annina, is believed to honour Portuguese heritage, reflecting the family's second home in the country.

Eugenie and her husband Jack Brooksbank, who already have two sons, August, aged five, and Ernest, aged three, shared precious photographs from the newborn's first weeks, including a cuddle with her older brothers. The new arrival is 15th in line to the British throne, behind her two brothers.

Birth Announcement Details

At the time of the birth, the royal family issued an official statement: "Her Royal Highness Princess Eugenie and Mr Jack Brooksbank are delighted to announce the safe arrival of their daughter, born on Monday, 3rd August 2026, at 6.20pm, at a hospital in Lisbon, Portugal."

The baby weighed 6 pounds 9 ounces at birth. The statement added: "Their Majesties The King and Queen and other members of The Royal Family were delighted to be informed of the news."

The announcement follows the couple's tradition of choosing meaningful names, with their sons' names also carrying royal and historical connections. The family resides partly in Portugal, where they have a second home, and the new name reflects their affection for both England and Portugal.
