Stourbridge service to thank wildfire responders led by Bishop
Stourbridge wildfire responders honoured at church service

The Bishop of Dudley, Martin Gorick, will lead a special church service in Stourbridge on Sunday, October 18, at 7pm, to reflect on August's devastating wildfires and thank those who helped during the emergency. The service will take place at St Thomas' Church on Market Street, Stourbridge, and will offer prayers for those affected by the fires while recognising the work of firefighters, emergency services, council staff and volunteers.

Bishop Martin, who was among hundreds evacuated during the fires, said: "Many others lost their home and everything in it. I'm very aware of how much the community has been impacted by what happened and I hope this will be a chance to gather and support one another."

Community gathering and leadership

The service will also be led by the Revd Andrew Sillis, with the Mayor of Dudley and representatives from West Midlands Fire Service attending. Everyone is welcome to attend, and refreshments will be available afterwards.

The event is designed to bring the Stourbridge community together in the aftermath of the wildfires, which caused significant disruption and damage across the area in August. Fire crews were pictured working on Racecourse Lane, Stourbridge, during the height of the emergency.

Recognising responders and supporting affected residents

The gathering will provide an opportunity for residents to show appreciation for the efforts of firefighters, emergency services, council staff and volunteers who responded to the crisis. It also aims to offer spiritual support to those whose lives were affected by the fires.

Bishop Martin's personal experience during the evacuations adds a poignant dimension to the service, as he was directly impacted by the events. His message emphasises the importance of communal support and resilience in the face of adversity.

Representatives from West Midlands Fire Service will be present, underscoring the collaborative response to the emergency and the ongoing recovery efforts in the region.
