Channel 5's Cause of Death returns tonight (October 14) with an episode investigating the death of 17-year-old amateur boxer Ed Bilbey, who collapsed during a title bout in 2017. The documentary follows the coronial investigation and the questions his family were left with.
Ed Bilbey, from Derbyshire, was competing for the East Midlands amateur youth welterweight title. Nine minutes into the fight, he collapsed. Paramedics and hospital staff attempted to save him, but he was pronounced dead later that evening. His family and the young opponent who witnessed the collapse were left struggling to understand what had happened.
Forensic pathologist leads investigation
The episode, airing at 9pm on Channel 5, follows forensic pathologist Dr Richard Shepherd as he investigates how an apparently fit young athlete could have died. The programme offers unprecedented access to a rarely seen investigation, from the emergency call through post-mortem examinations to the inquest.
First released in 2022, Cause of Death returned for its fourth series last month after a two-year wait. It follows investigations into sudden, unexpected or unexplained deaths, with first-hand testimony from forensic experts.
Family describe 'superfit teenager'
Ed's mother Michelle, brothers Henry and George, and grandmother Janet describe him as a "superfit teenager". He was studying for a college sports qualification during the day and training at his local boxing gym at night.
An exercise physiologist appointed by the coroner reconstructs Ed's preparations for the bout. The investigation examines potentially dangerous weight-loss methods and an extreme training regime, asking whether they could explain his death. A specialist review of his heart provides further clues.
Second case examined
Tonight's episode also examines the death of Isaac Harris, a 21-year-old University of Warwick student who had stopped answering calls from family and friends. In June 2023, his stepfather Stephen drove 100 miles to the home Isaac shared with his flatmate Vlad. When Stephen opened the bedroom door, he found Isaac face-down on his bed.
An initial post-mortem provides no clues, according to the programme's synopsis. A toxicology report then reveals the absence of vital medication used to control epileptic seizures, prompting investigators to consider whether a seizure could have caused his death.
Inquest leads to boxing guideline changes
The programme follows the case through to an inquest, where questions about responsibility lead to a change in England Boxing guidelines. The synopsis adds: "For both families, knowing how their sons died is only the start of understanding why."
Cause of Death airs on Channel 5 on Wednesdays at 9pm and is available to watch and stream on 5.
