Just five miles from the bustling sands of Aberdyfi lies Tywyn, a seaside gem often overlooked by beachgoers. With its own promenade, ample parking, and easy beach access, Tywyn offers a quieter alternative for those seeking sun, sea, and sand.
What Makes Tywyn Special?
Tywyn's promenade provides direct access to the beach, with both free and pay-and-display parking options. The waters of Cardigan Bay are home to harbour porpoises and bottlenose dolphins, making it a prime spot for wildlife enthusiasts. Visitors are encouraged to keep their eyes peeled for these magnificent creatures, which the author has spotted many times.
After a day on the sand, visitors can enjoy a meal at the local pub, known for its Sunday lunch, or the newly opened Neptune bar. The Wales Coastal Path runs through Tywyn, offering spectacular walks with views of Cardigan Bay, Snowdonia, and the Cambrian Mountains to the south.
Facilities and Activities
The town provides all essential amenities, including ice-cream shops, public toilets, a small children's paddling pool, and a recreation ground with tennis courts. The Victorian Slipway is a popular spot on sunny days, where visitors can sit outside and soak up the views while enjoying a Sunday lunch that the author highly recommends booking in advance.
For those seeking more than just beach time, Tywyn offers mini golf, tennis, a historic cinema, charming shops, and excellent restaurants. It's a delightful place for a leisurely stroll through the town.
Surfing Conditions
Tywyn beach is a good surf beach, with the best conditions occurring either side of high tide. The area south of the slipway towards Aberdyfi is the most popular and is considered ideal for beginners. Those interested in surfing can check the Tywyn webcam for current conditions.
Dog-Friendly Beach
During the summer months, from 1 April to 30 September, a well-signed section of the beach in front of the promenade is off-limits to dogs. However, fantastic stretches of beach to either side remain accessible for dogs all year round, making Tywyn a great choice for pet owners.
