York Maze honors Sir David Attenborough's centenary

The team at York Maze has announced that this year's giant corn maze design will celebrate Sir David Attenborough's centenary. Opening to the public in July, the maze will showcase an image of the renowned broadcaster and naturalist, surrounded by iconic animals from his nature programmes.

A Tribute to Sir David Attenborough

Tom Pearcy, farmer and maze master, explained the early announcement: "We are revealing the theme earlier than usual to coincide with Sir David's 100th birthday today. Each year we select a topical theme for the maze design. I grew up watching David Attenborough; he is a British broadcasting icon, and I am honored to contribute to his 100th birthday celebrations."

Over one million maize seeds have been planted in the 15-acre field. The image will be cut into the field as plants emerge, and by mid-July, the fully grown crop will reveal the portrait of David Attenborough within the maze pathways.

The "Sir David Attenborough 100 Years on Planet Earth Maze" will be open from Saturday, July 11 to Thursday, September 3, after which the crop will be harvested. Families can navigate the pathways to find six viewing platforms and special photo points featuring life-size models of iconic animals from Sir David's nature programmes.
