Alison Hammond's Surprising Family Connection to Boxing Legend Muhammad Ali
This Morning star Alison Hammond has revealed an unexpected and deeply personal link to the late heavyweight champion Muhammad Ali, sharing that she and her siblings were named in his honour. The beloved TV presenter disclosed this heartwarming family story during a recent appearance on The Jonathan Ross Show on ITV, captivating fans with the tale of her father's unique role.
A Father's Admiration Leads to a Lasting Tribute
Alison explained that her father, Clifford Hammond, worked as Muhammad Ali's bodyguard whenever the boxing legend visited Birmingham. "My dad named me, and I've got a sister in Jamaica called Alicia, and then I've got a brother called Ali," she said. "The three of us are named after Muhammad Ali because my dad was his bodyguard—he absolutely loved him." Clifford's admiration for Ali was so profound that he chose to immortalise it through his children's names, creating a lasting family tribute to the sports icon.
She elaborated on her father's duties, noting, "Whenever Muhammad Ali would come to Birmingham, my dad would be called out to go and look after Muhammad Ali." This close professional relationship allowed the Hammond family to forge a special bond with the champion, blending personal affection with professional respect.
A Childhood Meeting with a Legend
Born and raised in Birmingham, Alison also shared a poignant anecdote about actually meeting Muhammad Ali in person, though it happened at an age when she was unaware of his global stature. "You know, I've met him. But it was at an age where I didn't want to meet him," she recalled with a laugh. "You know, like when your mum drags you out. I didn't know who he was! I was like, pulling away from him. I got photos of me going, who's this weirdo?"
Muhammad Ali passed away in 2016 at the age of 74 after a long battle with Parkinson's disease, but his legacy continues to inspire millions worldwide. Alison's story adds a touching, personal dimension to that legacy, highlighting how his influence extended far beyond the boxing ring into the lives of ordinary families in Birmingham.
Addressing Celebrity Traitors Rumours
During her appearance on The Jonathan Ross Show, which aired on Saturday, March 21, Alison also took the opportunity to address swirling rumours about her potential participation in the next series of the BBC hit show Celebrity Traitors. While expressing her admiration for host Claudia Winkleman and the programme, she clarified that scheduling conflicts would prevent her from taking part.
"I can't do it because I'm doing Bake Off," she stated firmly. "I think it's the same time when I'm doing Bake Off, so that's a definite no. I'm so sorry, I would love to do that. I wouldn't want to be a Traitor though, I'd want to be a Faithful. I don't want no stress." This candid response put an end to speculation while showcasing her busy schedule and commitment to her current presenting role on The Great British Bake Off.
The full interview with Alison Hammond aired on The Jonathan Ross Show on ITV and ITVX, offering fans a deeper glimpse into her life beyond the daytime TV screen. Her revelation about the Muhammad Ali connection has since sparked widespread interest, underscoring the enduring appeal of both the boxing legend and the charismatic presenter from Birmingham.
