Mansfield Poetry Competition Invites Entries for Historic Mural Project
Residents of Mansfield and individuals with ties to the town are encouraged to participate in the Writing on the Wall poetry competition. This initiative is a key component of the ongoing restoration efforts for the Old Town Hall and two adjacent shopfronts, aiming to blend artistic expression with heritage conservation.
Competition Details and Inspiration
The competition remains open until April 30, 2026, and seeks poems inspired by themes of contemplation found in the Memorial Garden. These include Community, Hope, Inspiration, Kindness, Courage, Reflect, Strength, Support, Respect, and Proud. Entries should be between 100 and 300 words, typed in Arial or Times New Roman 12pt font, and submitted anonymously via email to regeneration@mansfield.gov.uk with the subject line POETRY COMPETITION. Entrants must include their details in the email body for contact purposes.
Prizes and Judging Process
Winning poems will directly influence a mural to be painted on the rear wall of the Grade II listed Old Town Hall. This artistic addition will complement repairs using traditional lime render and celebrate the ornate shopfronts originally designed by renowned local architect Watson Fothergill. The competition will be judged by Mansfield’s Poet Laureate, Richard C. Bower, with results announced on Friday, May 8, 2026.
Prizes for the competition include:
- A £100 Amazon voucher for the winner
- £50 for the first runner-up
- £30 for the second runner-up
- Copies of shortlisted poems and signed books by the Poet Laureate
Supporting Workshops and Resources
To assist aspiring poets, two free workshops will be held at the Mansfield Palace Theatre:
- Writing Performance Poetry: Thursday, March 19, from 6-8pm, led by poet Leanne Moden
- Poetry Competition Workshop: Tuesday, April 14, from 6-8pm, featuring Leanne Moden and guest readings by Richard C. Bower
Informational leaflets are available at various locations, including Mansfield Museum, Central Library, the Bus Station, and Toffee Hut Coffee Shops. Alternatively, individuals can request leaflets by emailing regeneration@mansfield.gov.uk.
