Once notorious for drug-related crime, The Boat pub in Wednesfield is set to reopen in August as a desi mixed grill restaurant following a £300,000 renovation. The Grade-II listed building, situated on Church Lane overlooking the Wyrley and Essington Canal, had been closed since 2020 after police intervention due to what co-owner Avtar 'Goldie' Singh called the 'cocaine and cannabis capital' of the area.
From troubled past to community hub
The pub, which dates back to the early 1800s, received approval from Wolverhampton council in September 2023 for its transformation. Singh, 46, a Wednesfield local, has invested heavily in the property, installing marble-like walls and murals of Punjabi music legends. 'I want to do something special,' he said. 'When people come here, they should say, "You know what? We've got something here in Wednesfield."'
The restoration has stirred strong emotions among residents. Singh recounted one woman who broke down in tears upon visiting, as her husband had once worked at the pub. 'It feels more like I'm part of Wednesfield, part of a community, more than a business,' he added.
Challenges with listed building regulations
The project faced hurdles due to the building's listed status. Singh argued that excessive red tape is deterring people from restoring historic buildings across the country. 'Why are people not touching these buildings? Because they're making your life harder, rather than supporting you,' he said.
Despite these challenges, the transformed venue aims to serve as a community hub, bringing a unique dining experience to Wednesfield. The menu will feature desi mixed grill dishes, offering a culinary focus that reflects the local South Asian community.
A new chapter for a historic landmark
The Boat pub holds significant local heritage, having been a canalside gathering spot for centuries. Its closure in 2020 left a void in the area, with residents concerned about antisocial behaviour. The redevelopment is seen as a positive step toward revitalising the neighbourhood.
Singh's investment not only refurbishes the interior but also preserves the building's character. The murals of Punjabi music legends add a cultural touch, blending modern desi cuisine with traditional pub architecture.
