Steam-Powered Nostalgia Returns to Leicester's Abbey Pumping Station

Leicester's historic Abbey Pumping Station is set to transport visitors back in time later this month with a captivating display of steam-powered toys and vintage vehicles. The popular Steam Toys in Action event promises a nostalgic day out for all ages, offering a unique glimpse into the mechanical marvels of yesteryear.

A Day of Vintage Delights and Mechanical Wonders

On Sunday, February 22, the pumping station will come alive with an impressive array of exhibits. Alongside the steam-powered toys, boats, and trains taking centre stage, visitors can admire historic fire engines, vintage buses, a classic milk float, and an old electric bread van. The station's magnificent beam engine will also be in full steam, adding to the authentic atmosphere.

For those seeking a hands-on experience, rides will be available on the steam-powered narrow-gauge railway for a nominal charge of 50p. Additionally, the Forget me Not mini railway, lovingly built and maintained by volunteers from the Leicester Museums Technology Association, will be running throughout the day.

Practical Details for a Perfect Family Outing

The event runs from 12pm until 4.30pm, with the pumping station's café open for refreshments. Adding to the vintage charm, a traditional coal-fired chip van will be on site selling freshly-fried chips.

Tickets offer excellent value, especially when purchased in advance online. Prices are as follows:

  • Adults: £6 (online) / £7 (on the door)
  • Children: £2 (online) / £3 (on the door) – under-fives go free

Exclusive Behind-the-Scenes Tour for Engineering Enthusiasts

The following Saturday, February 28, presents a special opportunity for those fascinated by Victorian engineering or the history of the pumping station. The Steam with the Team guided tour will grant access to areas normally closed to the public, including the basement beneath the running engines.

This hour-long tour is not suitable for children under 10, and participants are advised to wear appropriate footwear and clothing for a working engine room environment. Advance tickets are priced at £9 for adults and £8 for concessions when booked online, with on-the-door prices set at £10 and £9 respectively.
