Welcome to this week's edition of Brum Food Club, our weekly round-up of everything you need to know from Birmingham's food and drink scene. Features Writer Kirsty Bosley brings you the latest updates, with a big admission: she ate three cakes yesterday. Not alone, but sampling treats from the new kids on the block at Dads Lane.
New Cake Shop Opens with Bargain Prices
A wonderful new old-school cake shop has opened opposite the famous Dads Lane Fish Bar. The Cake Place is the creation of two young businesswomen bakers, both raised by single mothers in large families. They understand the feeling of visiting a shop where not everyone gets something special, so almost everything on the menu is under £3. Prices to rival Greggs, indeed.
Cost of Running a Coffee Shop in New Street Station
After Greggs moved into a mega new unit in New Street Station, we wondered how much it would cost to run a little coffee shop right in the heart of it all. It is considerable: take a look at what you would get for a cool £100,000.
Residents Angry Over Unauthorised Food Court
In other food and drink news, locals kicked off after a new food court opened in Alum Rock without planning permission. Residents turned out with placards demanding that the council 'enforce the law' at the new Adderley Road spot. Cars began lining up at Rock Park, much to the surprise of locals who had no idea it was happening. The council and food court bosses have responded.
Snobs Opens as Aston Villa Fan Zone
Snobs is opening as a special Aston Villa fan zone ahead of the match against SC Freiburg. It is Villa's first major European final in 44 years, so it is not something that could go by quietly. Entry is less than the price of a pint, so get your claret and blue on and go dancing up Snobs.
Tribute to Julia Pallister of Ju Ju's Cafe
The community has shown up en masse to share loving memories of Julia Pallister, owner of Ju Ju's Cafe. The businesswoman had been serving up roasts and more beside the canal for 18 years. Her daughter and restaurant co-owner Beatrice paid tribute to the mother who 'came from nothing but built something beautiful'. Donations to Birmingham Hospice in Julia's memory are being accepted.
