Filming for a new BBC drama based on Caleb Azumah Nelson's award-winning 2021 novel 'Open Water' has commenced in Birmingham and London. The eight-part series, described as a 'powerful love story,' is led by Nelson himself as lead writer, director, and executive producer, co-produced by Mam Tor Productions and B-Side Productions.

The BBC has confirmed that Toheeb Jimoh and Dujonna Gift will portray the lead roles of Marcus and Effie. Jimoh, known for his Emmy-nominated role in 'Ted Lasso' and appearances in BBC's 'Anthony' and 'Industry,' makes a notable return. Gift, making her lead television debut, previously appeared in Disney's 2025 live-action 'Snow White' and the West End production 'Two Strangers (Carry a Cake Across New York),' as well as the upcoming second series of BBC's 'Ludwig.'

Plot Synopsis
The official synopsis reads: 'Marcus works in retail while trying to develop a career as a photographer. Effie is studying dance at university in Dublin. From the moment they meet, they feel an immediate, undeniable connection. However, Marcus is unwilling to pursue their connection after learning that Effie is in a relationship with his friend Samuel. The duo are brought together through a shared project in London, but can they resist their desires?' It concludes: 'They seem destined for each other, their crush evolving into a love that is ocean deep. But love is never enough, and their path towards one another is treacherous. Will they sink or swim in open water?'
