Netflix has released a new raunchy nature documentary parody from the creators of Big Mouth, arriving just days after Sir David Attenborough turned 100. The series, titled Mating Season, offers a crude and provocative spin on the animal kingdom, affectionately ribbing the beloved broadcaster.
Attenborough's Milestone
The legendary presenter and natural historian reached the milestone of becoming a centenarian on 8th May, with King Charles III and Queen Camilla amongst those paying homage to the cherished British icon. Attenborough is perhaps best recognised for his enormously popular documentaries including Planet Earth and Blue Planet, with his gentle narration, passionate environmental campaigning, and extraordinary career spanning decades.
Mating Season Premise
The show features a spoof of Attenborough's hushed voiceover guiding viewers through the mating rituals of various creatures. It centres around introverted bear Josh (played by Zach Woods), raunchy raccoon Ray (Nick Kroll), lesbian fox Penelope (Sabrina Jalees), and terminally single deer Fawn (June Diane Raphael). Kroll, alongside Andrew Goldberg, Jennifer Flackett and Mark Levin, developed the series — the very same team responsible for Netflix's wildly popular puberty comedy Big Mouth.
A trailer for Mating Season opens with an unmistakable spoof of Attenborough's iconic documentaries as a narrator speaks over a shot of planet Earth: "For all of Earth's creatures, the greatest pursuit is finding a mating partner." As viewers are introduced to Josh sobbing on his bed, the voiceover continues: "This unimpressive beta male is faced with another mating season all alone. And failure to mate could mean the end of a bloodline." Josh spots the narrator and is stunned to discover his life is being documented. After taking a swipe at the camera, the teaser shifts to a glimpse of the risqué escapades that lie ahead.
Mixed Reactions
The series has garnered a mixed reaction from Netflix viewers thus far. One user responded to the trailer on YouTube: "Netflix is really scraping the bottom of the barrel with this one." Another disgruntled viewer complained: "Ah yes another 'adult cartoon' where the plot is sex, how original." Another admitted: "I'm already wondering how long this show will last. Because with a plot like this it'll probably get cancelled after just one season."
Mating Season is available to stream on Netflix now.
