Alex Nutt, a 26-year-old pianist, has officially been accepted into the 2026 World Championship Old-Time Piano Playing Contest, a highly prestigious competition held in the United States that celebrates the rhythmic and nostalgic sounds of bygone eras.
A Musical Journey Spanning 18 Years
For Alex, this opportunity marks a significant milestone in an 18-year musical journey. A 2022 graduate of the University of Southampton with a specialisation in piano performance, he first discovered his passion for the 'Old-Time' style a decade ago. Alex shared his inspiration, stating: "I became interested in the style when I was around 16, particularly the works of ragtime composer Scott Joplin."
Breaking the Mould as a Welsh Contestant
While the competition is traditionally dominated by American performers, Alex is breaking the mould by entering as a rare international contestant, specifically representing Wales.
