Newport Pianist Alex Nutt to Represent Wales in US Old-Time Piano World Championship
A talented local musician from Newport is set to embark on an exciting journey from Gwent to Mississippi, as he prepares to showcase his skills on a global platform. Alex Nutt, a 26-year-old pianist, has officially been accepted into the 2026 World Championship Old-Time Piano Playing Contest, a highly prestigious competition held in the United States that celebrates the rhythmic and nostalgic sounds of bygone eras.
A Musical Journey Spanning 18 Years
For Alex, this opportunity marks a significant milestone in an 18-year musical journey. A 2022 graduate of the University of Southampton with a specialisation in piano performance, he first discovered his passion for the 'Old-Time' style a decade ago. Alex shared his inspiration, stating: "I became interested in the style when I was around 16, particularly the works of ragtime composer Scott Joplin."
Breaking the Mould as a Welsh Contestant
While the competition is traditionally dominated by American performers, Alex is breaking the mould by entering as a rare international contestant, specifically representing Wales. His participation brings a unique flair to a line-up that spans the Atlantic, highlighting the global appeal of this musical genre.
Challenging Competition Rules and Repertoire
The World Championship is not for the faint of heart, with strict rules requiring contestants to perform music written before 1939, capturing the golden era of bars, vaudeville, and piano duels. The repertoire includes:
- Ragtime and traditional jazz
- Novelty and stride
- Boogie
Alex will be required to perform five distinct pieces, including a classic ballad and a performance centred on this year's theme: 'Food and Drink'. Despite the fierce competition, Alex maintains a positive outlook: "I really hope to do well, but as long as I have fun playing music that I love, that's the main thing."
Overcoming Financial Hurdles Through Crowdfunding
While Alex possesses the talent to reach Mississippi, the logistics of international travel present a significant hurdle. The costs associated with transatlantic flights and accommodation are substantial. To ensure Newport is represented in the championship, Alex has launched a crowdfunding campaign to help offset the financial strain. Members of the community who wish to support his journey can contribute via his GoFundMe page.
