A 76-strong community choir brought music to the streets of Sheffield by performing 20 free mini concerts in a single day. The musical marathon was organised to mark each year of the group's history and legacy in the city.
Musical Marathon Across the City
The group travelled to various busy locations for the performances, starting at the local bus station at 10:20am. Members then entertained the public at the train station, Sheffield Cathedral, Sheffield Children’s Hospital, Weston Park Museum, Henderson’s Relish, and on a tram. As a community choir, the group brings together people from varying life experiences who share a mutual love of song. Their wide musical catalogue ranges from modern pop tracks and protest anthems to traditional local classics.
Two Decades of Local Harmony
The group originally held its very first rehearsal on a Wednesday evening back in September 2006. While the membership has grown and changed over the last two decades, the singers still meet every Wednesday to socialise and practice. Led by musical director Val Regan, the singers have performed at festivals across Europe and are a regular fixture at local Pride events. They also perform annually at the Winter Gardens as a long-standing part of the festive calendar.
International Travels and a Big Finale
The musicians have previously travelled to Paris for Gay Pride and performed alongside international groups at Cadogan Hall in London. They also support important local events, including the Trans Day of Remembrance and the city's Holocaust memorial event. The group travelled even further afield last month to sing at the International Queer Choir Festival in Brussels. The major four-day European event featured 120 choirs and 4,000 singers.
The anniversary celebrations will officially conclude later this year with a special formal indoor performance. The grand finale will allow the musicians to celebrate the supportive community they have successfully built over the last 20 years. The event is scheduled for Saturday, November 14, 2026, at Firth Hall, Sheffield. Cost is to be confirmed.
