Bocking Theatre Club Revives Classic Pantomime After Three Decades
Bocking Theatre Club is set to stage its biennial pantomime during the upcoming half-term week, bringing a beloved classic back to life. The club's production of Babes in the Wood was last performed in 1993, making this revival a highly anticipated event for the local community. This year's show features several of the original cast members, though they will be taking on different roles, adding a unique layer of nostalgia and continuity that underscores the production's significance for the organisation.
A Diverse Cast and Crew Come Together
True to the club's tradition, the cast and crew for this pantomime are remarkably diverse, ranging from seasoned regulars to complete beginners. The performers, aged between eight and over 80, are all local residents who have dedicated months to rehearsals. Preparation has not been without its hurdles; unexpected illness required understudies to step in just a week before opening night. However, the cast has risen to the challenge, ensuring the production is now ready to delight audiences.
Farewell to Local Legends
This pantomime holds special meaning as it marks the final show for two long-serving members of the crew: Margaret and Terry Surrey, who are stepping down from their roles as Director and Stage Manager. Both have been with Bocking Theatre Club for more than 50 years, earning numerous awards for their productions and accolades for outstanding long service within the community. Their dedication has cemented their status as local legends.
While they look forward to this final production and their subsequent 'retirement,' Margaret and Terry will not be leaving the club entirely. Nevertheless, their absence in future pantomimes will be deeply felt. This show is particularly poignant for the pair, as the cast includes several family members, such as their daughter, granddaughters, son-in-law, and niece, making it a heartfelt farewell celebration.
Performance Details and Ticket Information
The production of Babes in the Wood will run from Wednesday, February 18 to Saturday, February 21. Evening performances are scheduled from Wednesday to Saturday at 7.15pm, with matinee performances on Wednesday and Saturday at 2pm. Tickets are still available, but advance purchase is recommended to secure a seat.
