Godalming Theatre Group Returns with Sister Act
Godalming Theatre Group (GTG), a cherished local theatre company with over 60 years of history, is set to stage the feel-good musical Sister Act from Tuesday, July 14, to Saturday, July 18, at the newly refurbished Ben Travers Theatre, Charterhouse, Godalming. The production promises to be a joyous celebration of friendship, courage, and the transformative power of music, drawing on the company's strong regional following and collaborative spirit.
GTG has built a reputation for high-quality productions that attract performers from far beyond the town. Many cast members have professional musical-theatre training but have chosen other careers, while others travel long distances to participate. This dedication reflects the warm, collaborative atmosphere that defines the group, according to the company.
A Beloved Story Brought to Life
Sister Act is based on the hugely successful 1992 film starring Whoopi Goldberg, adapted into a stage musical that opened in London in 2009 and became an immediate hit. The story follows Dolores Van Cartier, an aspiring nightclub singer who witnesses a crime and is placed in protective custody in a convent. Disguised as a nun, she struggles to adapt to a life of quiet contemplation, leading to comedic and uplifting moments.
The musical has delighted audiences worldwide with its infectious score and uplifting message. For GTG, the production is directed by Keith Thomas, known for his professional gloss and successful local musical theatre productions. The live band of nine musicians, a hallmark of GTG shows, is led by Steven Bean.
Community Spirit and Professional Quality
GTG's success stems from its ability to blend community involvement with professional standards. The company's membership is large and enthusiastic, with many performers bringing transferable skills from other professions. This mix creates a unique energy that keeps audiences returning year after year.
Stephanie Mottershead plays the lead role of Dolores, and the cast is supported by a dedicated production team. The Ben Travers Theatre, recently refurbished, provides an ideal venue for the show. Tickets are available by telephone or online.
As the company gears up for final rehearsals, the production is expected to be a highlight of the local summer arts calendar. The combination of a beloved musical, a talented cast, and a committed community theatre group promises an entertaining experience for all.
