A comedic adaptation of Homer's ancient Greek epic, The Odyssey, will take to the stage at New Mills Art Theatre next month, promising a light-hearted take on Odysseus' legendary journey home from the Trojan War.
Titled The Odyssey - A Comedy, the production will run on Friday, September 18 and Saturday, September 19, with a cast of local actors. The play is part of a special programme celebrating 115 years of performances at the historic community venue in Derbyshire.
A playful twist on a classic tale
The show has been adapted for the stage by David Brittles, a scientist by day, who says the production offers a stark contrast to the recent Hollywood adaptation by Christopher Nolan. Brittles believes the story's surreal and outlandish elements lend themselves naturally to comedy.
"The film tells the story in a dramatic and serious way – we do not," Brittles said. "I think the surreal and outlandish nature of the story leaves itself open to comedy."
He encourages audiences to "see our incompetent hero Odysseus on his ridiculous journey home to Ithaca, after the battle of Troy," and to "gaze in amusement as he battles with gods, sea monsters, and multiple cyclops in a retelling that the Ancient Greeks would not approve of!"
Cast and performances
Eight of the nine cast members come from the High Peak area, adding a strong local flavour to the production. The play will feature two evening shows and one matinee performance, providing multiple opportunities for audiences to catch the humorous retelling.
Brittles added: "Come see the story how it was never intended!" The production aims to entertain both those who have seen the recent film adaptation and those who are new to the tale.
