A common seal pup found washed up on Hunstanton beach is making a steady recovery at a local animal hospital. The pup, named Opal, was discovered stranded on the sand with no sign of her mother nearby, weighing just 9.5kg and suffering from dehydration and malnourishment.
Critical Condition Upon Admission
When Opal was admitted to the SEA LIFE Hunstanton sanctuary, she was in a vulnerable state. Her body temperature was elevated, and she required immediate rehydration fluids. On her first day, caregivers also introduced her to water to help lower her temperature, a crucial step in stabilizing her condition.
The pup had been found washed up against timber groynes, a common hazard for young seals that become separated from their mothers. The rescue team acted quickly to bring her into care before her health deteriorated further.
Progress and Daily Care
Now, Opal is enjoying six whole fish at every feed and has gained weight, reaching 10kg. Her appetite is a positive sign, according to the care team. However, she still has a long way to go: her target release weight is 25kg, which will indicate she is strong enough to survive in the wild.
