MP Mike Tapp Opens Applications for 2026 Summer School in Parliament
MP Launches 2026 Summer School in Parliament

Over the past months, I have been visiting schools across Dover and Deal as part of my Tapp into Politics programme, holding debates with young people on some of the biggest issues facing our country. The sessions have been designed not only to give me a better understanding of young people's views on politics and the challenges they face, but also to help students develop their confidence, public speaking and debating skills.

Having been inspired by the enthusiasm, insight and talent I have seen during these visits, I am delighted to announce the next stage of the programme: applications are now open for my 2026 Tapp into Politics Summer School, which will take place in Parliament on July 14 and 15.

Programme Details

The programme is open to young people aged 16 to 19 who live in Dover and Deal and will give a select group of participants the opportunity to experience first-hand what it is like to work in and around Parliament. My aim is simple: to help young people better understand how our democracy works and to show them the wide range of careers and opportunities that exist within politics, public service and the media.

Since being elected as your Member of Parliament, I have been passionate about ensuring that young people from our area have access to opportunities that can broaden their horizons and raise their aspirations. Too often, politics can seem distant or something that happens elsewhere. I want to change that by opening the doors of Parliament to local young people and showing them that they can play a role in shaping the future of our country.

What Participants Will Experience

Over the two days, participants will gain a unique insight into my role as an MP and what a typical day in Parliament looks like. They will learn about the responsibilities MPs have both in Westminster and in their constituencies, and see how Parliament operates behind the scenes.

Students will spend time with members of my team, who will explain the different roles involved in supporting an MP. They will learn about the different types of casework we deal with every day on behalf of local residents, from helping constituents access public services to supporting people facing complex challenges. I believe it is important for young people to understand that much of an MP's work is focused on helping individuals and communities navigate real-life issues.

To provide a well-rounded understanding of Parliament, I am also in the process of arranging participants to hear from a member of the House of Lords, journalists and other professionals who play an important role in the UK's democratic institutions. These sessions will help demonstrate that Parliament is supported by a diverse range of people and professions, all working together to keep our democracy functioning effectively.

Encouraging Applications

One of the things I enjoy most as an MP is meeting young people who are passionate about current affairs and eager to make a difference. Dover and Deal are home to some incredibly talented young people, and I want to ensure they have opportunities to see the heart of British democracy up close. Places on the programme will be limited, and I expect applications to be highly competitive. I would encourage any young person with an interest in politics, public service, journalism, communications or current affairs to apply.

I am looking forward to welcoming this year's participants to Parliament and helping them gain a greater understanding of what makes our democracy work.
