World Book Day Authors to Host Special Hull Library Event

World Book Day, the renowned charity dedicated to promoting reading for pleasure, is bringing bestselling and award-winning authors Christopher Lloyd and Serena Patel to East Park Library in Hull for a special free event. This exciting session celebrates the joy of reading and encourages children to fully engage with this year's festivities.

Celebrating Reading Ahead of Official World Book Day

The library event will take place on Thursday, February 26, just ahead of the official World Book Day on March 5. This timing aligns with the National Year of Reading campaign, which aims to integrate reading into cultural activities nationwide.

Research consistently demonstrates that reading for fun significantly enhances children's lives. It serves as the strongest predictor that a child will experience greater happiness and success in adulthood, even surpassing factors like family background or parental income. However, concerning statistics reveal that only one in three children currently report enjoying reading, marking the lowest level since 2005.

Addressing Declining Reading Habits

Additional data shows that just 41% of children aged 0-4 and 36% of those aged 5-7 are regularly read to. Furthermore, approximately one million children in the UK do not own a single book, and only 40% of parents express enjoyment in reading to their children.

Through library visits like this one, World Book Day authors and illustrators aim to reverse these trends by helping children discover books they love and experience reading as an enjoyable activity.

Featured Authors and Their Mission

Christopher Lloyd, co-author of Funny FACTopia! and CEO of What on Earth!, along with Serena Patel, author of Pia's Pet Club: Iguana Escape, will meet with children to share how they developed their own love of reading. Their goal is to inspire the next generation to cultivate lifelong reading habits for pleasure, as evidence shows this can transform lives.

World Book Day's approach emphasizes that young people are more likely to read when they perceive it as fun, entertaining, and social. The initiative focuses on allowing children to choose books they genuinely want to read and participate in celebrations that reframe reading as something enjoyable and shared.

The Vital Role of Libraries

Libraries play a crucial role in helping children develop a lasting love of reading. This year, World Book Day is collaborating with libraries to establish community token exchange hubs. These hubs will distribute books to children in disadvantaged and low-literacy areas, enabling more young readers to discover the pleasure of reading.

Children attending the Hull event will have the opportunity to select a World Book Day book for free using their £1/€1.50 book token. This project receives support from The Julia Rausing Trust and Arts Council England.

Official Statements on the Event's Importance

Fiona Hickley, executive director of World Book Day, commented: "World Book Day is a joyful and vibrant celebration of reading for fun, focused on inspiring children to view reading differently. Events like this one at East Park Library demonstrate that reading can be exciting and something to anticipate. Libraries provide a welcoming, judgment-free space where children can explore stories, share recommendations, and enjoy books beyond the classroom."

Christopher Lloyd added: "I'm a staunch champion for non-fiction as the best incentive to encourage children to develop a lifelong love of reading. I'm delighted to discuss my new World Book Day book Funny FACTopia! at Hull's East Park Library. I hope these fascinating facts will inspire children to follow their curiosity and discover that the real world is more amazing than anything imagined."

Serena Patel stated: "Becoming a World Book Day author is a huge honour. Libraries were always a special place for me as a child, and books served as a window to the world. The work World Book Day does to put books into young readers' hands each year is incredibly important."

National Year of Reading and Book Token Distribution

This year, World Book Day proudly participates in the National Year of Reading, a campaign to increase reading participation by integrating it into cultural spaces. Sponsored by National Book Tokens, World Book Day distributes over 23.5 million £1/€1.50 book tokens annually through schools, nurseries, libraries, prisons, and charities.

This distribution ensures that children who might not otherwise own a book can have one of their own. From February 12 to March 15, children can exchange their book token for one of 16 exclusive World Book Day books or use it as a £1/€1.50 contribution toward any full-priced book or audiobook at participating retailers.
