The Ramsey Academy in Halstead is set to introduce a mobile phone-free environment, with students required to secure their devices in Yondr pouches upon entering school grounds. The decision follows consultations with students, parents, and staff, sparked by government guidance on phone restrictions in schools.
Community consultation results
A survey of students revealed that 66% supported locking phones in pouches, 19% preferred lock boxes, and 8% wanted a complete ban. Parent feedback showed 96% in favour of the school's phone policy.
Implementation details
Starting in July, students will lock their phones in pouches at the start of the day and cannot unlock them until leaving. Exceptions will be made for students with medical conditions requiring app monitoring, who will receive adjusted pouches. Contact between students and parents can still be made via the school's landline.
Headteacher's perspective
Christian Appleford, head of school, said: "We want to give our students a learning environment where they can thrive. We realise they are growing up in an increasingly complex world, and that their lives are both offline and online. We want to give them a break from the emotional and social challenges that mobile phones can bring."
He added: "I think the majority of students want the distraction taken away from them, so they can concentrate on their learning. The pouches physically remove the temptation to check phones. I feel really positive about this change, especially after seeing the support we have from our whole school community."
