Hogarth Primary's Roald Dahl World Book Day Celebration

Hogarth Primary School Hosts Roald Dahl-Themed World Book Day Celebration

Pupils at Hogarth Primary School in Brentwood, Essex, were treated to a magical World Book Day experience, dressing up as characters from their favourite Roald Dahl stories. The school transformed every classroom into a different Roald Dahl tale, creating an immersive literary adventure for the children.

Immersive Book-Themed Activities

The day featured a packed timetable of creative events inspired by Roald Dahl's beloved works. Students engaged in various hands-on activities, including:

  • Creating dream jars inspired by The BFG
  • Learning a dance routine from Matilda
  • Making origami crocodiles based on The Enormous Crocodile
  • Designing beards reminiscent of The Twits
  • Crafting lollipop designs from Charlie and the Chocolate Factory

This elaborate celebration marks the second consecutive year that Hogarth Primary has organized a large-scale World Book Day event. Last year, the school transformed into Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry, continuing a tradition of fostering a love for literature through imaginative experiences.

School's Positive Transformation

The event holds special significance as Hogarth Primary recently received a positive Ofsted report, having previously been classified as a failing school. This turnaround highlights the school's commitment to improvement and educational excellence.

Deputy Headteacher Lauren King expressed her enthusiasm for the day, stating: "I didn't think we could better our World Book Day last year, but we may have done just that. World Book Day 2026 was absolutely wonderful."

She added: "The children really did have the most fantastic time, and the school was filled with fun, laughter and, of course, books. We spent weeks prepping all of the different props for the day. The day was definitely worth the effort to see the smiles on the children's faces."

Promoting a Love for Reading

King emphasized the importance of World Book Day in encouraging children to develop a lifelong passion for reading. "World Book Day is so important to encourage children to develop a love of reading," she explained. "To see the school transform into the setting of a Roald Dahl book helps the children to appreciate the wonder of stories and imagination."

The event successfully combined educational objectives with creative fun, demonstrating how schools can make literature engaging and accessible for young learners. The detailed preparation and thematic execution showcased the staff's dedication to creating memorable learning experiences.
