Monmouth School Head Melvyn Roffe Awarded MBE for Education Leadership
Haberdashers' Monmouth School proudly announces that its Head, Melvyn Roffe, has been presented with his Member of the Order of the British Empire (MBE) insignia by HRH The Princess Royal. The investiture ceremony took place at the Palace of Holyroodhouse in Edinburgh, marking a significant milestone in Roffe's distinguished career.
Recognition of Exceptional Contributions
The MBE honours Melvyn Roffe's outstanding leadership and lifelong commitment to education, with a particular focus on strengthening the bond between schools and their communities. Throughout his career, he has championed the belief that young people thrive when education is deeply rooted in civic responsibility and meaningful community engagement.
His work has included national initiatives aimed at widening access to key subjects such as Mandarin and computing. Additionally, Roffe has developed numerous partnerships that bring schools and local communities closer together, efforts that were central to the award of his MBE.
A Career Shaped by Service and Ambition
Melvyn Roffe's educational journey began in Monmouth, where he held early leadership positions at the former Monmouth School for Boys between 1993 and 2001. These formative years instilled in him the values of service, ambition, and community, which have shaped his leadership style ever since.
Over the following two decades, he went on to lead major independent schools across the United Kingdom. Roffe achieved the rare distinction of being elected to chair both the Boarding Schools' Association and HMC - The Head's Conference, showcasing his influence and respect within the educational sector.
Returning Home to Monmouth
In 2025, Melvyn Roffe returned to Monmouth to lead Haberdashers' Monmouth School, describing the move as "coming home" to a community with which he has deep professional and personal connections. Both of his children were born in Monmouthshire, and the family's ties to the town have remained strong over the years.
His MBE is a moment of shared pride for the Haberdashers' Monmouth community. It recognises not only national achievement but also a career shaped by values central to the school: integrity, service, and the belief that education enriches the wider community.
