Sunday Times names best West Midlands schools for 2026

The most influential secondary schools in the West Midlands for the coming year have been officially identified. The Sunday Times Parent Power Guide for 2026 has published its authoritative rankings, highlighting institutions across the region that have delivered outstanding academic results.

Celebrating Regional Excellence

Now in its 33rd year, the prestigious guide analyses the performance of over 2,000 schools across the UK. The rankings for 2026 are based squarely on GCSE and A-level results from the summer 2025 examination series, providing parents with a clear, data-led comparison of educational outcomes.

Helen Davies, the guide's editor, paid tribute to the teaching profession. She noted that despite significant pressures like funding constraints and growing concerns over pupil wellbeing, the leading schools show remarkable dedication. They are finding, she said, innovative ways to enrich their students and equip them for modern life.

The Top Schools Revealed

The guide awards several coveted titles. King Edward VI School in Stratford-upon-Avon was named the State Secondary School of the Year for the West Midlands. In the independent sector, King Edward VI High School for Girls in Birmingham received the accolade for Academic Excellence, while Solihull School was also celebrated as a top independent school.

For comprehensive schools, the title of Comprehensive School of the Year went to St Paul's School for Girls in Edgbaston. Other high-performing comprehensives included Arden Academy and Alderbrook School, both located in Solihull.

Birmingham's Leading Grammar Schools

The rankings also confirmed the strong performance of several selective state schools in Birmingham. Leading the pack were the grammar schools King Edward VI Camp Hill School for Girls, King Edward VI Camp Hill School for Boys, and Sutton Coldfield Grammar School for Girls. These institutions represent the pinnacle of academic achievement within the city, according to the latest data.

The publication of the guide provides a crucial snapshot for families considering their educational options. By focusing on verifiable exam performance, it aims to cut through the noise and highlight where students are achieving the strongest results as they prepare for university and future careers.
