Westminster Charity Gets £5k Boost for School Readiness
Westminster Charity Gets £5k for School Readiness

St Vincent's Family Project, a Westminster-based charity, has received a £5,000 grant from London Freemasons to help children from disadvantaged backgrounds prepare for their first day of school. The funding will support play sessions aimed at building emotional and communication skills in toddlers, as well as providing mental health therapy for parents.

Growing Need for School Readiness

Many children in Westminster are starting primary school without essential skills such as toilet training or social interaction. The charity's Chief Executive, Andrew Varley, noted a noticeable increase in developmental delays since the pandemic. "It’s been really noticeable, especially since the pandemic, that more children are, developmentally, further behind, by the time they start school," he said. The rising cost of living has also put extra pressure on local families.

How the Grant Will Be Used

The £5,000 grant will enable staff and volunteers to run play sessions designed to improve emotional resilience, communication, and physical skills. The charity also supports several local primary schools. Varley added: "This funding from London Freemasons will help us to make sure that children from disadvantaged backgrounds in Westminster, at least, will get the start they need in life."

Community and Donor Support

The funding has been welcomed by the community and the donors. Paul King of London Freemasons said: "We have great pleasure in providing support for the work that St Vincent's Family Project do in giving primary school children and their families the help they need to overcome other social disadvantages they may face." The project provides a welcoming space for parents of pre-school children to find support and therapy, addressing both child development and parental well-being.
