Talented young vocalists from a Hertford school have achieved a remarkable triumph, securing the top prize at a prestigious regional choir competition. The Duncombe School Harmony Choir has been crowned Prep School Choir of the Year at the Haileybury Choral Competition, a significant accolade that highlights the exceptional musical abilities of its Year 5 and 6 pupils.
A Celebration of Choral Excellence
The 2026 edition of the competition, hosted by Haileybury College in Hertford Heath, brought together leading independent prep schools from across the region, all vying for the coveted trophy. In a day filled with musical performances and workshops, the 18-piece Duncombe School Harmony Choir stood out, earning gold medals for their powerful rendition of Keep Your Lamps Trimmed and Burning, a traditional spiritual arranged by Greg Gilpin.
Judges and Audience Captivated
Claudia Grinnell, Director of Music at St Edmundsbury Cathedral and a judge for the competition, praised the performers, noting, "It was clear that all the singers were enjoying performing, and this drew the audience in and captivated them." She awarded Duncombe School a distinction, highlighting the intensity of their "extremely engaging" performance, which shone through in both the pupils' vocals and their expressive facial expressions.
Beyond the Classroom: Nurturing Talent
Jeremy Phelan, Headmaster at Duncombe School, emphasised the importance of such events, stating, "Events and opportunities outside the classroom, including competitions like this, are so important for developing and celebrating pupils' individual talents. We couldn't be prouder of our incredible singers, who put on a fantastic performance deserving of the top prize." The school, located on Warren Park Road and part of the Blenheim Schools family, focuses on high-quality education tailored to individual needs and aspirations.

The competition day offered more than just performances; it included a jazz workshop, a masterclass on Sir John Rutter's A Sprig of Thyme, and a special performance from the Haileybury Choir. Notably, the Haileybury Choir featured several talented former Duncombe School pupils, showcasing the lasting impact of the school's music programme.
