A 10-year-old boy from Llanfechain has been crowned the Junior Lawyers Club Debating Champion after impressing judges in a live online competition. Samuel Barr-Ellis, a pupil at Oswestry School Prep in Shropshire, triumphed in the contest for children aged nine to 11, which focused on the motion of universal healthcare for animals.
A Stellar Performance in a Live Debate
The competition challenged young participants to build public speaking and critical thinking skills using everyday topics. Samuel's performance stood out, particularly his opening statement, which drew on the sentiment that “Britain is a nation of animal lovers.” Susanne Tayfoor, barrister and founder of The Junior Lawyers Club, praised Samuel's composure and strategic thinking.
“He did an excellent job of calming himself before he put forward his argument in favour of universal healthcare for animals, taking a deep breath before starting with a strong opening statement,” Tayfoor said. “Samuel also made a fantastic counter-argument, from much earlier in the debate, arguing that despite the policy costing money, it will also save money in other areas; this demonstrated excellent listening skills, as well as retention, to be able to call back to something from much earlier and respond directly, with confidence.”

Tayfoor added: “Your confidence grew so much throughout the session, Samuel, showing commitment and excellent application of feedback; you are a very deserving winner, and we hope this continues to build your confidence in your skill as a debater.”
Samuel’s mother, Joanna Barr, expressed her pride, noting that her son has only been attending the Junior Lawyers Club on Sundays for a term. “We are incredibly proud of Samuel as he has only been attending Junior Lawyers Club, on a Sunday, for a term, but he absolutely loves it and jumped at the chance to take part in this competition over the summer holiday,” she said. “Samuel loves learning, so it was great for him to have this opportunity over the holiday. Watching his confidence grow throughout the competition was wonderful. The tutors are so engaging and it’s so well organised, he learns so much at Junior Lawyers Club and wants to talk about law and debate with us all the time.”
She added: “Debating teaches children to think critically, listen carefully to others and express their ideas with confidence and respect. Winning this competition is a fantastic achievement, and we’re delighted that his hard work has been recognised.”
Future Aspirations and Educational Impact
The young animal lover hopes to become a lawyer when he is older to help protect animals through the law. His headteacher, Claire Lyons at Oswestry School Prep, highlighted the broader educational benefits of his achievement. “Samuel’s success demonstrates not only his ability to speak confidently in public but also to listen carefully, analyse different viewpoints and construct persuasive arguments—skills that are valuable both in education and beyond,” she said.
The Junior Lawyers Club competition is designed to nurture young talent in public speaking and debate, with participants from across the UK. Samuel’s victory not only brings honour to his school and family but also underscores the importance of critical thinking and communication skills in today’s youth.
