Penistone schoolgirl wins book cover design competition

A creative schoolgirl from Penistone is celebrating after winning a national charity competition to design the front cover of an adventure book. The talented youngster beat competitors from across the country with her colourful artwork inspired by mysterious quests and magical worlds.

Competition raises funds for dementia charity

The contest was organised by high street business Scrivens Opticians & Hearing Care to raise vital funds for a dementia charity. Entrants were asked to donate £1 to take part, with all proceeds going directly to the Alzheimer’s Society to help people with memory loss. For her winning effort, 11-year-old Imogen Johnson received a £50 book voucher alongside a special notebook featuring her custom cover design on the front. Her victory comes as the optician's business marks its 11th consecutive year of fundraising for the charity.

Standing out from the crowd

The competition challenged children to let their imaginations run wild to create an engaging book cover concept. Imogen managed to capture the attention of the judging panel with her unique entry titled 'Mystery of the Missing Glasses'.

Amy Roe, branch manager at Scrivens on Penistone High Street, said: “Alzheimer’s Society is our chosen charity and this activity has been a fantastic way to engage children while raising awareness of its vital work. This year’s competition invited youngsters to let their imaginations run wild by designing the front cover of an exciting adventure book. Imogen’s colourful ‘Mystery of the Missing Glasses’ entry really stood out and captured the fun and creativity of a brilliant escapade!”

Inspiration during a family visit

The young artist discovered the competition entirely by chance during a routine family visit to her local opticians. She spotted the entry forms while waiting for her younger sister to experience her very first eye test at the branch.

Louise, Imogen's mum, said: “Imogen loves to read and make up her own stories, so this competition really captured her imagination. She spotted it at the Penistone branch while we were waiting for her little sister to have her first eye test - the same branch where Imogen and her older sister had their first eye tests too. Imogen was absolutely delighted when she heard the news that she'd won! We couldn't be prouder of her, and it's been such a joy seeing her creativity celebrated in this way, especially for a competition that supports such a wonderful charity.”

Longstanding charity commitment

The opticians firm was first established back in 1938 and remains a family-run business to this day. It currently operates 166 high street stores across England and Wales and employs more than 1,000 people.
